Maltman, Thomas
The night birds

A fabulous book that's a mixture of historical fiction, a family saga, and a coming of age story. Set in Minnesota in the 1860s and 70s, the story begins with a lonely 14 year old boy who gradually discovers more about his family. The plot centers on relations between pioneers and the Dakota Indians, but weaves backwards and forwards in time, from one character's viewpoint to another, from dreams and folklore to vivid descriptions of prairie chaos so skillfully that the book is a pleasure to read.
